Sin and Society: A Look in the Mirror from Nero to Now

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we gather today amidst a world grappling with its moral compass. Lasciviousness, a blatant disregard for moral principles, seems to permeate our society. This isn't new. History offers us a chilling mirror reflecting a similar period: the reign of the Roman emperor Nero.

Nero's rule was marked by cruelty, extravagance, and a decline in morals. His personal life was a spectacle of indulgence, and his policies reflected a disregard for the well-being of his people. This societal shift towards excess and self-gratification ultimately led to the downfall of the Roman Empire.

Are we, like Nero's Rome, teetering on the edge of moral decay? The easy answer is: we must be vigilant. But vigilance requires introspection. Let us ask ourselves:

• Do we prioritize fleeting pleasures over enduring values?
• Do we celebrate self-centeredness over compassion and service?
• Do we confuse freedom with the absence of responsibility?

The Bible offers a clear message: true fulfillment comes not from chasing fleeting desires, but from living a life guided by God's principles. In Galatians 5:19-21, we are presented with the "works of the flesh" – immorality, impurity, and licentiousness – and contrasted them with the "fruit of the Spirit" – love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Which path are we choosing?

Our world may seem saturated with messages glorifying a life of excess. But the truth is, lasting happiness comes from living a life of purpose, guided by love, compassion, and service to others.

Here's what we can do:

• Turn back to the teachings of Christ. His message of love, forgiveness, and service to others provides a moral compass in a world adrift.
• Be a beacon of light. Let your life reflect the values you believe in. Show kindness, compassion, and stand up for what's right.
• Be the change you want to see. Support organizations that promote strong moral values and a sense of community.

Remember, even in the darkest of times, there is always hope. By choosing to live according to God's will, we can be the change we wish to see in the world. Let us not be a society defined by its vices, but one guided by its virtues.

May God grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate these challenging times. Amen.

The man in this 1946 photo is Ken Shimizu. At the time, he was 35 years old and had 2 children. Shimizu didn't exercise, always went to bed late, and ate a lot. It seems that he had also replaced water with beer and that he overdid it with sake. Every night he had a late dinner and then had a lot of late-night snacks with different types of food that we now call garbage. But what did Shimizu do to have such a physique?
